The town is the site of the first field hospital established by an outside nation offering assistance following the disaster. Some people held onto an antenna on the roof. Photos show the roof of the building completely submerged at the height of the tsunami. After the disaster, Endo was missing and was later found dead. All of the interior and walls were destroyed. The three-storey headquarters of the department remained standing but only the steel frame remained. Miki Endo (远藤未希), a 25 year old employee of the town's Crisis Management Department, continued to broadcast warnings and alerts over a community loudspeaker system as the tsunami came in. Close to 200 people were rescued from the roof of the building. However, it was partly flooded, and 74 out of 109 patients died. Shizugawa hospital was one of the few major buildings that survived the tsunami. He returned to government affairs, founding the headquarters for disaster control at the Bayside Arena on March 13, 2011. Out of the 130 people who worked at the town hall, Sato was one of only 30 who reached the roof. The three-story building of the town's Crisis Management Department ( 防災対策庁舎, Bōsai Taisaku Chōsha) was covered by the tsunami. They were discussing the much smaller tsunami caused by the March 9 foreshock before the March 11 earthquake. When the earthquake struck, the mayor of the town, Jin Sato (佐藤仁), was talking at the town assembly. Survivors wrote " SOS" in white lettering, in the playing field of Shizugawa High school. All the others have gone." Since the schools were all on high ground, many children were orphaned. Perhaps a few thousand at the school on the hill opposite. There were around 7,000 of us on the hill that day. According to an English teacher at the local high school located on a hill above the tsunami, "The entire town was simply swept away. One early report suggests that many residents may have evacuated to the nearby city of Tome, Miyagi. At least 31 of the town's 80 designated evacuation sites were inundated by the tsunami. Although both were 20 meters above sea level, the tsunami covered them and washed people away. The other was inland away from the center of the town. One was on the southern headland overlooking the town. The town had two evacuation centres where residents could go to escape from a tsunami. 9,700 people are confirmed alive and evacuated. Only the tallest buildings remain and an estimated 9,500 people are missing, roughly half the population. 95 percent of the town was destroyed by the 2011 Japanese tsunami that followed the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake.

On Wednesday, it closed at $671.45.īut by staying the course, Cook has raised some concerns that he may lack the imagination and the bold ability to conjure up mind-blowing new products, which was Jobs’ hallmark. A year ago on October 4, Apple stock closed at $381.80 a share. They’ve all been met with solid reviews (Maps app aside) and sold well.Īpple has gone on to become the most valuable company in history. So far, the company has only released minor updates of popular products, like speedier laptops, the new Mac operating system, the refreshed iPod line and the new, taller iPhone 5. Remember Ping, Apple’s failed attempt at a social network centered around music?Ĭook has not launched any bold new products in the past 12 months. “To simply put Steve Jobs on some sort of pedestal and say Apple could do no wrong under Steve’s leadership is wrong,” said Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg. Unfortunately for Apple’s soft-spoken chief executive, he has been incessantly compared to his predecessor after every presentation, successes and failures. He is still discovering his own style – a tricky undertaking given the abnormal amounts of scrutiny that follow Apple’s every move.Ī recent article by Bloomberg Businessweek, citing interviews with current and former Apple executives, employees and partners, states “the company is happier and even somewhat more transparent than it was during Jobs’ tenure … There are fewer frantic calls at midnight, and there’s less implicit pressure on engineers to cut short or cancel vacations in the heat of product development cycles.”Ĭook recently announced that most Apple employees at company headquarters will get the week of Thanksgiving off with pay, according to reports. His product announcements are not one-man shows, but presentations shared with other Apple executives. Cook comes off as having a far more relaxed and approachable personality, and he is less inclined to be the center of attention. Who is the next Steve Jobs (and is there one)?Ĭook’s mea culpa is just the latest demonstration of how he, and by extension Apple, is different from Jobs and the Jobs era at the company. Some pundits compared his swift and contrite reaction to a terse and rare public apology from Jobs more than a month after complaints over the iPhone 4’s antenna erupted in 2010. The new Maps app crafted in-house by Apple to replace Google Maps on iPhones and iPads was riddled with flaws, from missing features to misplaced businesses, landmarks and even towns.Ī week after the phone hit stores, Cook apologized for the map publicly and, with surprising humility, even pointed customers to competing products. The most recent display of the company’s shift in tone was its reaction to the bungled iOS 6 Maps app. Apple also allowed the Fair Labor Association to do a thorough audit of conditions at the China factories, and Apple vowed to improve pay and hours. He took a trip to China and toured a Foxconn plant in person. On a call with investors in February, Cook answered questions, cracked jokes and was generally open and friendly.ĭid Apple’s fanboy fever peak with Steve Jobs?Īfter an outcry over working conditions at the factories of Apple’s manufacturing partners, most notably Foxconn, Cook took swift action. A more sizable act of goodwill was the cash dividend Apple paid out to investors – the first in 17 years. There was a bus tour of investors that stopped at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, where they were treated to cookies and a presentation by Apple’s chief financial officer. Apple was no stranger to lobbying (although it spends far less than some other Silicon Valley companies, like Google), but sending Cook was a way of letting politicians know Apple was ready to grow its relationship with Capitol Hill and that the company might take a stronger interest in policy issues in the future.Īpple also has worked harder to woo Wall Street. In May, Cook went to Washington to meet with congressional leaders to open lines of communication that were mostly blocked in previous years. By contrast, Apple from the outside has appeared more open under Cook, thanks to a number of orchestrated meetings and trips meant to appeal to the various factions – consumers, investors and politicians – interested in the world’s leading tech company. In the year since Steve Jobs’ death, Apple has undergone a gradual and subtle brand makeover, shaking off some of the more unpleasant characteristics associated with Jobs and taking on bits of the personality of its new leader, Tim Cook.įor all his brilliance at product design, Jobs showed little interest in glad-handing with Apple partners or investors. “This is the same band I used on ‘Harvest’” It’s unsurprising that the next music he’d make would veer towards a mood of quiet reflection. In a 1992 interview with Q magazine, Young explained how Harvest Moon became a sequel of sorts to Harvest. “Now that it’s created, it seems to be related to Harvest, but when I started work on it, I had no idea that it was gonna be like that,” he admitted. “The first thing I did was to finish a song called You And Me, which I’d started writing in 1975. Then I wrote a few more songs until I had enough to start thinking about doing a session. I began to figure out which musicians to use and once I’d written down the various names and started calling them, I realised, This is the same band I used on Harvest. So it was the songs which dictated who I played with. Intriguingly, Young had been performing a snippet of You And Me as early as 1971, along with working versions of Harvest songs – as heard on the Neil Young Archives Official Bootleg Series release Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 1971, where a few lines from You And Me act a prelude to I Am A Child.Įverybody was available it all happened real easy.” Luckily, there was no problem getting the guys together again. But, being Neil Young, he did what Neil Young does: change, again.Twenty years later, however, in its Harvest Moon incarnation, You And Me finds Young sounding haunted, singing ambiguous lyrics that seem to flit between an imagined past with the old flame who originally inspired the song and memories of his years with his then wife, Pegi.īack then, the nascent song shared the bittersweet feeling of one of the best Neil Young songs, After The Goldrush, in the way that it seemed to look back on a past relationship. It must’ve been nice, being on the edge of 50 and lionized by people half your age. At the time, Young was coming off some of the noisiest, most radical shows of Crazy Horse’s career (captured on Weld) and had been recast as the progenitor of a generation of underground bands like Nirvana and Sonic Youth-a distinction you couldn’t quite give to David Crosby, all due respect. The connection to Harvest is explicit, but the album also fits in a set of what you could call Gentle Neil: Comes a Time, Old Ways, Prairie Wind, Homegrown. The album’s most touching moment is on “Old King,” where, in the course of eulogizing a beloved dog, Young mentions having kicked him when he was bad: a moment of violence neutralized by time and made strangely beautiful by the fact that Young knows it won’t ever happen again. The effect is like looking at a hologram, or a trick image that changes when you tilt the card back and forth: The object is fixed, but what you see in it flickers-and both feel equally real. The poignancy isn’t just in the latter album’s tenderness-the string sections, the country lilt, the pedal steel guitar-but in the way that Young slips between past and present: how a memory of then becomes a vision of now (“Unknown Legend”), how circular time stirs feelings we think we’ve forgotten (“Harvest Moon”). So, while the feel of the albums is similar-gentle, plaintive, romantic-the experience is different: one, a catalog of romance according to youth, and the other according to the reflections of middle age. The same person, maybe, but separated by a Rubicon of experience. But Harvest was made by a recently divorced 26-year-old still negotiating his creative path, and Harvest Moon by a multiplatinum legend who’d secured the privilege of doing more or less whatever he wanted. One way to hear Harvest Moon is as an echo of 1972’s Harvest-a leap made easier by the fact that many of the same musicians played on both. The warmth in Snowbound comes from its other undertones. But I have found that it looks pretty warm in a lot of spaces. Sherwin Williams calls Snowbound a cool paint color.
